The Pilates experience that we practice today had its beginnings in the early 20th century as a series of 500 exercises originally named Contrology developed by Joseph Pilates.
Joseph’s unique system combined smooth controlled movements focusing on breathing and concentration.
The unique, spring based Pilates equipment was invented by Joseph while working as a nurse in a prison during WWI. Joseph rigged patient’s hospital beds with a series of springs and straps and taught them his exercise method in an effort to help infirmed men regain the ability to move and become more active.
Following the war, Joseph returned to Germany where he continued teaching his exercise method that became a favorite of the dance community. The adoption of the Pilates method by the dance community continued when Joseph came to New York City in 1926 and opened his studio where he worked with his wife Clara.
As they built their New York studio, Joseph was known to have a militant training approach while Clara was known to be a calming force often balancing Joseph’s intimidating personality.
He continued to train students until 1966. Among his students were the first Pilates instructors, the highly respected Pilates Elders who have brought Joseph’s teachings into this century. Following Joseph’s death in 1967, Clara continued training students for ten years.
The influence of Pilates on current fitness enthusiasts began in the 1980s when exercise scientists began studying Pilates and applying the principles to current exercise philosophies.
