Class Levels & How
Progression Works

At The Body Center, class progression isn’t based on what your body can push through — it’s based on how well your mind and body are working together. Pilates is less about mimicking movement and more about learning how to initiate, control, and sequence movement with intention. Our class structure reflects this approach, with progression guided by instructors rather than left to self-assessment.

Essential Classes

(Foundation of Control)

Essential classes form the foundation of our Pilates practice. These sessions focus on syncing breath with movement, learning how to stabilize through motion, and developing clear, intentional muscle engagement. Emphasis is placed on concentration, control, and awareness — skills that support every other class we offer.

Essential work is not something you “outgrow.” Many clients continue taking Essential classes throughout their practice as a way to refine control and reconnect to fundamentals.

Layered & Progressive Classes

(Building Organization)

Many of our classes build on the Essential framework by introducing additional layers of complexity, coordination, and continuity. As mind–body communication improves, movements become more fluid and transitions more seamless — not because they’re rushed, but because control is improving.

These classes are designed to support a range of experience levels within the same session, with instructors offering options that allow each client to work appropriately without comparison.

Intermediate & Advanced Classes

(Precision & Flow)

Intermediate and Advanced classes assume a higher degree of internal organization — the ability to activate, stabilize, and transition between muscle groups with intention. These classes move with greater flow and precision, not because the exercises are physically “harder,” but because the expectation of control is higher.

While many bodies are physically capable of performing advanced Pilates exercises, readiness is defined not by strength, but by the ability to maintain control, clarity, and breath as movement becomes more continuous.

Advanced work isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing less with greater precision.

Guidance & Progression: You don’t need to decide when to move on or what comes next. Progression at The Body Center is guided thoughtfully by instructors, helping you build confidence, control, and clarity over time.

If you’re unsure where to start or what to try next, our team is always happy to help guide you.
