Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? You’re likely not the first.
Below you’ll find answers to the questions clients ask most — from getting started to scheduling, memberships, and studio details.

Use the filters to quickly find what you’re looking for.

Yes.

Essential Reformer is open to beginners and designed to build a strong foundation. You don’t need prior Reformer experience.

Arriving a few minutes early helps you settle in. Your instructor will guide you through setup and pacing so you’re never guessing what to do.

Which class should I take?

If you’re new—or returning after a break—start with Essential Reformer.

If you’ve practiced consistently and can maintain control through foundational exercises, you may feel comfortable in Intermediate Reformer.

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you decide. And if you want a highly personalized start, a private session is always an excellent option.

How does progression work?

Progression isn’t based on time—it’s based on control. Our instructors guide progression by observing how you move:
Can you maintain alignment under load?
Do you understand setup and spring changes?
Can you sustain control through transitions?
As your organization improves, more layered movement becomes available. Advancement is thoughtful and guided—not rushed.

Do you offer memberships or just class packs?

We offer both class packs and membership options. Class packs are flexible and never expire; memberships are a great fit if you plan to come consistently. If you’re unsure which is best, we’re happy to help you choose.

I’m new—what if I feel lost in class?

That’s exactly what Essential-level classes are for. Instructors will guide setup, pacing, and options so you know what to do and what to feel. If you ever want more personal guidance, a private session is a great way to build confidence quickly.

Can I use my classes at either studio location?

Yes. Your classes can be booked at either studio location—Brookline or West Newton.

Do class packages expire?

No—class packages don’t expire. Use them at your own pace.

What if I’m running late?

If you’re running behind, please message us as soon as you can. We’ll do our best to accommodate you, but for safety we may not be able to bring someone in once class is underway.

How does the waitlist work?

If a class is full, join the waitlist. When a spot opens, you’ll be notified and can claim it based on availability. Openings are most common the day before and the day of class.

Are grip socks required?

Yes. Grip socks are recommended for safety and hygiene.

Bare feet aren’t permitted on the equipment. If you forget yours, you can purchase a pair at the studio.

What should I do if I have an injury or limitation?

Please let us know before class (and mention it to your instructor when you arrive). Pilates can often be modified, but the right options depend on what’s going on. If you’re working with pain, recovering from an injury, or unsure what’s safe, we recommend starting with a private session so we can tailor the work to you.

Where are you located?

We have two studios: Brookline and West Newton. You can find addresses, parking notes, and detailed directions on our Locations page.

When should I arrive?

For your first visit, arrive about 10 minutes early so you can get settled and meet your instructor. For returning clients, 5 minutes early helps class start on time.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable, form‑fitting clothing so your instructor can see alignment and help you move safely. Grip socks are recommended for traction and hygiene.

What makes Pilates different from traditional gym workouts?

Pilates is less about “more reps” and more about better movement. We focus on breath, alignment, and controlled strength so you build stability, mobility, and coordination that carry into real life. You’ll feel the work—without the wear and tear.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel or reschedule up to 2 hours before class without penalty. Cancellations within 2 hours (and no‑shows) are charged so we can keep spots available for others.

What if a class shows “full”?

Join the waitlist. Spots often open as schedules change—especially the day before and the day of class—and you’ll be notified if a space becomes available.

What do I need to know the first time I come to the studio?

Arrive a little early, wear comfortable fitted clothing, and bring grip socks if you have them. Your instructor will guide you through setup and options, and we’ll show you how to adjust equipment safely. After class, you’ll wipe down your station—everything you need is provided.

Is there parking?

Yes. Parking options vary by location—Brookline has nearby metered and lot parking, and West Newton has convenient street/municipal options nearby. If you’re coming at a busy time, give yourself a few extra minutes.

Is Pilates safe for pregnant women?

Pilates can often be practiced during pregnancy with the right modifications and guidance. Please check in with your healthcare provider, and let us know you’re pregnant before class so we can recommend the safest option—often a private session is the best place to start.

Is Pilates a low-impact exercise?

Yes—Pilates is generally low‑impact and designed to build strength and control with less joint stress than many high‑impact workouts. Options and modifications are always offered.

How many people are in a class?

Classes are intentionally small so instructors can coach clearly and offer individual attention. Class size varies by format, but you can expect a small group (typically a handful of clients, not a crowded room).

How long does it take to see results from Pilates?

Most people notice small changes—like better posture, easier movement, or feeling more “connected”—within a few weeks of consistent practice. Visible strength and control build over time, and the biggest changes come from showing up regularly (even 2–3 times per week).

How long are Reformer Pilates classes?

Most group classes at The Body Center are 55 minutes.

How is Pilates different from yoga?

Both can be great. Pilates tends to emphasize strength, stability, and controlled movement mechanics; yoga often emphasizes poses, flexibility, and breath with a different pacing and focus. If you’re unsure what fits your goals, we’re happy to help you choose.

How do I register for class?

Create an account through our online schedule, then you can book classes and manage your purchases from there. If you need help, contact us and we’ll walk you through it.

How do I know which class to take?

Start with an Essential class if you’re new to Reformer Pilates or returning after time away. If you have prior experience, we’re happy to recommend a starting point—just reach out and tell us a bit about your background.

How do I book a Private?

Private sessions can be booked by reaching out to our team with your preferred studio and general availability. We’ll match you with an instructor and help coordinate times.

Do you provide mats and props?

Yes. We provide all props used in class (blocks, bands, rings, balls, etc.), and equipment is cleaned between sessions.

Do you have changing areas?

We have restrooms and a place to store personal items. Most clients arrive dressed for class and bring only what they need onto the floor.

Do I need to have prior Pilates experience to try Reformer Pilates?

No prior Reformer experience is required. Most new clients start in our Essential‑level classes so you can learn the equipment, pacing, and key fundamentals with clear coaching.

Can Pilates help with back pain?

Many people find Pilates helpful for improving core support, posture, and movement habits that can contribute to discomfort. If you’re dealing with pain or a recent injury, we recommend starting with a private session or getting guidance from your healthcare provider so we can modify appropriately.

Can Pilates alone provide a comprehensive fitness routine?

Pilates can be a strong foundation for strength, mobility, and body awareness—many clients use it as their primary training. For broader fitness goals, it pairs well with walking/cardio and (if you enjoy it) additional strength work. We’re happy to help you find a balance that fits your body and schedule.

Can I just show up for class or do I need to pre-register?

We recommend booking ahead—classes are small and often fill. If you’re trying to join last‑minute and the online window has closed, contact us and we’ll help if there’s space.

Are there locker rooms and shower facilities?

We don’t have locker rooms or showers. We do have restrooms and space to place personal items during class.
